A few weeks ago, SpazDog Comics had a booth at the Phoenix Cactus Comicon. Before I go into my mess that was a creator sighting, I just want to say that Matt Solberg has done a great job with the Con. Two years ago, we had a booth at the con. It was a one day convention with a smallish retailer. The two main out-of-town guests were Marv Wolfman and Todd Nauck. Not too shabby, but he has really blown the Con up big time. It's now two nights plus a preview night and has a long list of guests in the comic book, manga and anime industry.
So, we set up for Friday Preview Night and a flood of people came rushing in. About thirty minutes into preview night, an older couple walked up to the booth admiring a framed Army of Darkness print that I had customed framed by my friends at the Happy Valley Hall of Frames. They said they really liked it, so I went into detail about the workmanship that went into framing it. Five layers of matting, archival glass, one layer of sueded material matting, custom frame, and customized matte cut to give an "ooze" effect. The gentleman said that he really liked it and that he would be drawing the covers for an upcoming Army of Darkness mini-series. My mind jumped around. Army of Darkness had just ended at issue #13. Army of Darkness versus Marvel Zombies was coming out, but that couldn't be it. So I asked him, "What's your name?". "My name is Arthur...." he replied. Arthur...my mind reeled. Who could he be? Then I realized that Arthur Suydam was one of the guests. "You mean that guy!!!" I screamed pointing to a set of Art of the Barbarian Poster Book prints. "Yes, that guy." Arthur and his wife were extremely nice and forgiving of my fanboy faux pas. I talked to them several times that weekend. Arthur signed some books for the store and took a picture with me. So, it turned out to be a pretty good weekend.
